展覧会概要
江戸時代初めの寛永9(1632)年、美濃国(岐阜県)に生まれた円空(1632-95)は、出家後に、像を彫りはじめた32歳から亡くなる64歳までの30年余りの間に、日本の各地を巡錫しながら12万体の像を彫り遺したとされています。現在確認されているだけでも、実に5,400余体にも上ります。
本展は、円空没後330年を記念し、今も伝え継がれる円空像の中から、関西初公開を多数含む優れた像を厳選して紹介いたします。円空彫像のはじまりとされる自らの悟りの境地を追い求めた＜上求菩提(じょうぐぼだい)＞と、晩年の庶民を仏の道へ導き救済をめざした＜下化衆生(げけしゅじょう)＞で構成し、円空の信仰と布教の変遷を、躍動する鑿(のみ)使いで表現されたさまざまな祈りのかたちでたどります。

Exhibition Overview
Enku (1632-1695) was born in Mino Province (present-day Gifu Prefecture) in 1632 during the early Edo period. After taking Buddhist vows, he spent over 30 years traveling and preaching throughout Japan, creating an estimated 120,000 sculptures from age 32 when he began carving Buddhist images until his death at 64. More than 5,400 of these works are confirmed to still exist today.
This exhibition commemorates the 330th anniversary of Enku’s death by presenting a carefully curated selection of surviving works, including many pieces being shown in the Kansai region for the first time. The exhibition is composed of two parts: Jogubodai (“The Pursuit of the Enlightenment Above All“：before 1679), representing what is considered the beginning of Enku’s sculptural work as he pursued his own state of satori (enlightenment), and Gekeshujo (“Salvation and Enlightenment for Everyone”：after 1679), reflecting his later years when he sought to guide common people to the Buddhist path toward salvation. Through various forms of prayer expressed by the dynamic chisel work,the exhibition traces the evolution of Enku’s faith and missionary activities.
