Exhibition Overview

 MAKINO Kunio can truly be called “an artist who lived the Showa Era (1926 - 1989)”, as he was born in 1925, a year before it started, and passed away in 1986, the 61st year of the era. After graduating from the Oil Painting Department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (presently, Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1948, MAKINO chose not to be affiliated with any particular art association, but instead to display his works by organizing solo exhibitions. MAKINOʼs paintings were detached from the oppressive art circles throughout his lifetime, and can rarely be found in the art museums. Most of his artworks are kept and cherished by enthusiastic private collectors who purchased them at MAKINOʼs solo exhibitions. During the Showa Era, when MAKINO was working, many artists of his generation were creating their works by trying to catch up with the new information introduced from the West. However, MAKINO, who was an ardent admirer of Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn) since he was a boy, kept his love and respect for him throughout his lifetime, and tried to create his original works based on the extensive exploration of the classical realism techniques. MAKINO continued painting the so-called “old-fashioned” pieces, based on the European classical techniques.

The present exhibition commemorates MAKINOʼs 100th Anniversary. Mainly displaying the works, which are usually cherished in the private collections by MAKINOʼs fans, this exhibition, while looking back at MAKINOʼs achievements as a painter who swept through the Show Era, also explores the significance of his artworks. We hope you will enjoy this exhibition, which aims to summon the spirit of MAKINO, who devoted his life to painting, and revive this Showa Era artist in the Reiwa Era.
