展覧会概要
世界の熱帯雨林、砂漠、そして日本国内の自然環境まで、自然と人の関わりをテーマに美しい映像と親しみやすい文章で伝え続ける今森光彦。今森は琵琶湖をのぞむ田園風景の中にアトリエを構え、写真撮影、執筆、切り絵制作、環境活動など、自然に親しみながら様々な活動をしています。
四季折々に違った表情を見せる田んぼの風景や人々の暮らし、そこに息づく輝く生命たち。どこかなつかしい日本人の心の原風景です。これらは、戦後の高度経済成長以前の日本では、どこでも普通に見られましたが、今は、貴重な風景になってしまいました。 本展は今森が琵琶湖周辺の自然を追った「里山」シリーズの後、新たなテーマとして取り組んできた「にっぽんの里山」です。日本全国で出会った里山の中から作品を厳選し、早春を軸に日本の美しい季節を追った写真展となります。 里山をめぐる今森の長い旅は、自然と人が調和する空間を鮮やかに浮かび上がらせ、美しく多様性に富んだこの国の豊かな自然とその価値を、見る人々に伝えてくれます。美しい写真とともに、自然と人の関わりを静かに問いかける本展を、是非お楽しみください。

今森光彦（いまもり みつひこ）
1954年、滋賀県生まれ。写真家。琵琶湖をのぞむ田園風景の中にアトリエを構える。自然と人との関わりを「里山」という空間概念で追い続ける。
里山という言葉は、1992年、今森が雑誌で発表して以来、多くのナチュラリストたちに支持され、その後、監修したNHKのハイビジョン番組「里山シリーズ」として発信され、世界に広まった。一方、アマゾンの熱帯雨林、アフリカのサバンナ、オーストラリアの砂漠など、世界各国の自然環境を精力的に取材してきた。
また、2006年からは、切り絵作家としての仕事を開始し、作品を多数発表する。ペーパーカットの企画展や作品展は、全国各地の美術館などを巡回している。
近年は、ガーデナー、環境農家、里山環境プロデューサーとしても活動をしている。
『里山物語』(新潮社)、『今森光彦の里山暮らし12ヶ月』(世界文化社)、『世界昆虫記』(福音館書店)、『里山を歩こう』(岩波書店)、『スカラベ』（Crevis）、『ミツツボアリをもとめて』(偕成社)、『神様の森 伊勢』（小学館）など多くの著書がある。第20回木村伊兵衛写真賞、第28回土門拳賞、第56回小学館児童出版文化賞、第42回産経児童出版文化賞大賞など数多くの賞を受賞。

Exhibition Overview
From the world’s tropical rainforests and deserts to natural environments across Japan, Mitsuhiko Imamori continues to convey the relationship between nature and human beings through captivating images and inviting prose. Based in an atelier nestled in a rural landscape overlooking Lake Biwa, he engages in a wide range of activities, including photography, writing, papercutting art, and environmental work, all in close interaction with nature.
Rice fields that display varying expressions through the four seasons, the daily lives of the people, and the vibrant life forms that thrive there—these scenes form a nostalgic, quintessential landscape fondly etched in the hearts of the Japanese people. Such views were once common throughout the country before Japan’s post-war period of rapid economic growth, but today they have become precious and rare.
This exhibition showcases “Japan’s Satoyama,” a new theme that Imamori has pursued following his “Satoyama” series documenting the natural environment around Lake Biwa. Carefully selected from his encounters with satoyama across the country, these works focus on early spring and the unfolding beauty of Japan’s seasons.
Through his long journeys into satoyama landscapes, Imamori vividly reveals them as places where nature and people coexist in harmony, conveying to viewers the richness and value of Japan’s beautiful and diverse natural environment. We invite you to enjoy this exhibition of stunning photographs, which quietly invites reflection on the relationship between nature and people.
Mitsuhiko Imamori Profile
Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1954. Photographer. Works from an atelier nestled in a rural landscape overlooking Lake Biwa, and continues to explore the relationship between nature and people through the spatial concept of satoyama.
The term satoyama gained broad support among naturalists after Imamori introduced it in a magazine in 1992. It later spread worldwide through NHK’s high-definition program “The Satoyama Series,” which he supervised. While focusing on satoyama on one hand, Imamori has also extensively documented natural environments around the world, including the Amazon rainforest, the African savanna, and the deserts of Australia.
In 2006, Imamori also began working as a papercutting artist, releasing numerous works. Both curated and solo exhibitions of his papercut art have toured museums and galleries throughout Japan.
In recent years, he has expanded his activities as a gardener, environmental farmer, and satoyama environmental producer.
Imamori has received many awards, including the 20th Kimura Ihei Award, the 28th Domon Ken Award, the 56th Shogakukan Award for Children’s Literature, and the 42nd Sankei Children’s Book Award Grand Prize.
