青山悟 刺繍少年フォーエバー in Kyoto

青山悟、1973年東京生まれ。ロンドン大学ゴールドスミスカレッジ（イギリス）テキスタイルアート科を卒業後、シカゴ美術館付属美術大学大学院（アメリカ）にて美術学修士号を取得。以降、古い工業用ミシンを使用して制作した刺繍作品を各地で発表しています。

青山の作品で取り上げられるのは、刺繍やミシンという技法にまつわるジェンダーの問題をはじめ、現代社会における労働や資本主義の構造など多岐にわたります。近年は、新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックや世界各地で起こる戦争や紛争、またそれらが引き起こす分断などの社会問題を背景に、批評性とユーモアを交えながら刺繍という手段で常に表現し続けてきました。

本展では、青山の初期の作品から新作までを織り交ぜて展示します。

Satoru Aoyama was born in Tokyo in 1973. After completing the BA Textiles program in the Visual Art Department at Goldsmiths College, University of London, U.K., he went on to complete the MFA program in the Fiber and Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, U.S.A., where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree. Since then, he has presented embroidery works created using vintage industrial sewing machines in various locations. 

Aoyama’s works address a wide range of themes, including gender issues associated with techniques such as embroidery and sewing machines, as well as the structures of labor and capitalism in contemporary society. In recent years, against the backdrop of social issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, wars and conflicts around the world, and the divisions that have emerged as a result, he has continued to use embroidery to express the social environment in a critical yet humorous manner. This exhibition spotlights a selection of Aoyama’s works, ranging from his early pieces to his most recent creations.
